DFG funding
The research project "Intrinsically Functionalized Alumosilicate Glass Ceramics" is funded by the German Research Foundation. In this project, different gradients (chemically, crystallite size, crystal phase fraction or coefficient of thermal expansion) are to be induced inside a glass-ceramic during crystallization in order to be able to adjust more precisely the macroscopic properties.
Possible improvements are
- Higher strength, due to compressive stresses introduced into the surface.
- Better chemical resistance, due to a chemically resistant glassy surfaces.
- Local optical changes, by controlling the crystallite size and refractive indices.
