Mechanical Behaviour of Materials

In grinding applications, a large number of different natural and synthetic ceramic materials are used due to their high hardness. In addition to the abrasive grain and the binder phase, active fillers in bonded abrasives or coated abrasives are decisive for the performance and service life of the tools. In addition to characterising the abrasive grain, the Mechanical Material Behaviour Division investigates the effect of active fillers in abrasives. The main focus lies upon cryolite and more environmentally friendly substitutes. Tribochemical interactions between filler, workpiece and abrasive grain and their effects on the grinding process are investigated.
