Excursion to Schott
Insight into Research and Development: Chair of Glass and Glass Ceramics visits SCHOTT in Mainz
On July 25, 2023, the Chair of Glass and Glass Ceramic organized a day excursion to the renowned company SCHOTT in Mainz. The participant group consisted of research associates, the professor, as well as students from the fields of Material Science, Materials Engineering, and Industrial Engineering specializing in Materials and Process Engineering. The objective of the excursion was to gain insights into SCHOTT's research and development processes, along with exploring the company's laboratories and departments.
The event commenced at 10:00 AM with an introduction to analytics and the development of measurement technology, led by Dr. Eiden. During this session, participants gained insights into the analytical procedures and measurement technology developed at SCHOTT.
From 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM, the participants were guided through the Chemistry Analytics laboratories. Here, they received practical insights into quality assurance and the chemical testing of SCHOTT materials.
The tour continued from 11:15 AM to 12:00 PM with a visit to the Reliability and Glass Durability laboratories. Participants observed how SCHOTT tests and enhances the durability and longevity of its glass products.
The lunch break from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM provided an opportunity for exchange in the company's cafeteria with Dr. Eiden.
The Department of Physical Analytics was explored after the break. Participants gained insights into the advanced instruments and technologies employed by SCHOTT to analyze the physical properties of its products.
Another lab tour from 1:45 PM to 2:30 PM focused on Surface Analytics. Participants were exposed to the intricate processes involved in analyzing and optimizing the surface properties of materials.
The excursion concluded with a closing discussion and a dialogue with Dr. Eiden from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Participants utilized this opportunity to ask questions and share their impressions.
The day excursion ended at 3:00 PM. Participants returned to Aachen with a deepened understanding of SCHOTT's operations. The excursion was deemed an informative and enriching experience by all participants.
